Noise in AC and Front suspention

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 2:53 pm

Hey any help here would be great.  I posted this once before and was not
able to see my own posting or replies if you responded once before.
Please respond again.  Thanks……

I have a 97 900SE Turbo.  Im going in for my last visit to the
dealer before the 50K Warrantee is over. But I have two annoying issues
with the car.  1) The front suspension is very loud when I hit a harsh
bump or pothole.  It feels like there are no shocks.  Ride is still
great besides that.  Need to be sure I explain this problem to the
dealer so they fix it the first time.
2)  When the Air conditioning turns on and off, there is a clunk and a
strain on the Engine,  Seems a little too loud to be normal.  I just got
the car 15K ago, not sure if this is typical of such an expensive car.
The first two times I bought it in they never heard the sound.  The
third time they found gas in the vacuums canister.  Said I must have
filled the car while running it????  They thought that they had fixed
it….. Nope.  could anyone please help with either of these issues.
Email would be great. But I do try to read this news group often.

thanks

    Scot,

concerning the noise when the air-conditioning turns on and off.
When the magnetic cluth is engaged it is normal with a clicking noise.
If the noise is getting louder and louder I would guess that something
is wrong. A good way of repeating the noise is to be parked in some
+20 °C ambient and pressing the ‘econ’ button several times.
Econ means no AC (copressor off). When the AC is engaged the load on the
    motor
increases dramaticlly and the engine management system will
rise the engine rpm (a very good engine management system would
do this compensation unnoticable). The reason for this on and off is
that the system pressure (or the evaporator temperature) is to high
(low) and the built in pressure (temperature) sensors will make the
compressor to disengage until pressure/temperature is back to
    the lower level.
The 9-5 has a more sophisticated compressor with a variable
    displacement, hence no cluth needed!

    Regards

  2. scot,

i have a ’98 900 SE turbo …. and unfortunately have EXACTLY the same
    problems…..

my Swiss (not known as good mechanics) dealer said that these problems were
*ahem* normal.  After i made many complaints they installed a modified piece
sent by SAAB headquarters  to the front struts (dont ask what or where) and
the noise although reduced quite a bit is still there.

concerning the AC… aside from the famous clunk which changes in loudness
due to outside temparature…. i also have a occasional intermittent (every
2-3 minutes) hissing sound when AC is engaged.  Still no comments on that
one from the dealer aside from it’s normal.

anyway, otherwise everything else runs great…. love the motor!

    regards
    izzo

The ‘hissing’ noise is the expansion valve (TXV) opening and closing, the
    function
of the valve is to give the desired amount of refrigerant to the system (I
    would guess
that this is a concern on cars used in temperatures ranging from say 15°C to
    25°C,
when warmer the AC is running full open?!)
The noise is ‘in’ every valve but of course due to tolerances in the spring
dampening the valve the noise is more or less frequent (and also depends on
the ambient temperature). Replacing the valve might help but it is not
a guarantee. I know that the diesel engine have a stiffer spring might be
    worth asking for a replacement?
