I have a 1989 900 convertible (turbo) and there is a problem that arises
every now and then.
When the problem occurs, the following things happen:
(1) the check engine light stays lit and the shift-up light flashes on and
off constantly (even when the car is in neutral);
(2) the car stalls out whenever I accelerate quickly so I have to avoid
punching the gas because if I do I’m liable to suffer whiplash when the
engine starts sputtering;
(3) the idle becomes unsteady in neutral;
(4) occasionally I smell a little gasoline in the garage where the car is
parked.
This condition comes and goes, with no rhyme or reason as to when it comes
or how long it lasts. It has happened in winter and summer (I live in
Massachusetts), and it has lasted anywhere from a few minutes to a few
weeks. Then it disappears as mysteriously as it came.
Any ideas as to what could be causing this? All fuel lines and seals have
been checked. My mechanic is stumped too.
Thanks.
Bill
