I’m shopping for a new car and I’ve driven the 900SE and loved it. But I keep
hearing that buying a Saab is asking for trouble- with lots of maintenence
and repairs. When I see a person driving a Saab – I usually get positive
feedback – but the reputation must have come from somewhere. I am
specifically interested in hearing from owners of 900SEs from 1996 through
present. I’d like to know what problems have been encountered and how service
and expense was to fix them. I’m also concerned a little about how well they
hold their value. Any info is appreciated.

I’ve owned 4 Saabs – 2-9000′s and 2-900′s and love them. I have found
all of them except my first (87-9000) to be very reliable. There were
a few years (around 89-90?) that I heard that morale was low
(uncertain future) and there were more apt to be problems with
assembly. GM bought in to them providing steady cash and other
advantages. I’m currently driving a 97 900 SE Turbo and it’s been
great. Was delivered with a faulty turbo gauge which they replaced of
course – now at 24,000 the only things it’s needed are normal
maintenance scheduled work and a wind whistle fixed.

I have 87 9000s I just bought on December 31, 1997. I had it put through
a pre-buy inspection at Swedish Specialists in Lorton, VA. The car had
145,890 miles on it, and the previous owner had to square away problems
the inspection uncovered. I paid $3400.
Another friend of my with an 87 9000 turbo fixed a rough idle and
stalling problem two weeks ago. The car runs like silk. If you want to
find out potential problems, go to the http://www.nhtsa.gov site. You can check
on technical service bulletins or recalls for Saab and any other make.
Just make sure any used Saab you buy is thoroughly checked out by an
independent Saab mechanic before you buy. It can save you a lot of
money.

I bought a 94 900 new, and it now has 105,000 miles on it. The only
problem I’ve had is a loose connection on a hose after a maintenance
visit.
