Clarian Radio

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:46 pm

The radio which is installed  in my Saab 9000, 1987 sometimes
refuses to turn on. Is there a source for schematics, trouble
shooting on the internet? If now, where can this information
be obtained?

Thanks,
Larry Callis

  1. I have a Saab 9000 86 with a clarion tape deck & equilizer.  I could
not get the tape deck to put out anything to the speakers/equilizer.
The "Audio Mode" button which was supposed to change between
volume/balance/etc did not seem to work.  I think it may have had
something to do with the security code feature, but i am not sure.  I
could not get it to work and ended up getting a new clarion cd player.

  2. Larry,

Your Clarion is doing the same as mine. Mine has a bad on/off switch. I
leave mine on, so it goes on and off with the ignition. As soon as I
have the money, I will be sending mine to Clarion Corp of America, Inc.,
    Factory Service Center, 25 Commerce Drive, Allendale, N J 07401, (201)
818-1166. If you send them your unit with money order for $80, a note on
the problems and your security code, they will repair it and send it
back. The last time I checked the turn around time was 5 to 15 days.

  3. Entering the security code will not make the radio run on..  This appears
to be a function of temperature.

My theory is that the processor which controls the radio, etc. is
not poperly powering up……? With schematics, at least I can hook
it up on a bench our ot the card , enter the security code … and
    find out what is flakey.

  4. Ken,
I thought this was a power switch but this doesn’t appear to be
true.  Even if you leave the power switch on, it may or may not
turn on when the ignition switch is turned on.

Do they fix the raido for $80 independent of what
they find is wrong with it?

    Thanks,
    Larry

  5. Larry,

If you want to know exactly what they do, I suggest you give them a call
at (201) 818-1166. It was my understanding when I called that they go
through and correct problems for the $80. The price goes up if you have
and send the equalizer and stereo. That should only affect you, if
your’s is a turbo model. The Clarion units are sensitive to electrical
damage. The unit in my 87 900S had a screwed up controller chip. That is
the one that controls the audio -volume/bass,treble and balance, as well
as switches back and forth when you go from radio to cassette and back.
The one in my 87 900S was really messed up when you tried to use the
cassette. It also made a popping noise during start up. All it takes is
bad boost from a set of jumper cables and you have problems.

  6. oh…and if you get a jump, watch out for the fuse in the equalizer.  I got a
bad jump, blew the fuse..and they replaced my radio first for some bucks before
telling me it was only a fuse…

You’re lucky… when my wife got a jump the fuse didn’t blow, but the amp did!
About $300 from SAAB… $50 used from the local Milwaukee SAAB specialists.
