99 9-3 Vibration – Any Advice??

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:41 pm

I’m heading back to the dealer on Monday to have them look at this problem a
THIRD time.  Any and all advice and leads are appreciated!

x
==================================

Our 1999 9-3 5-door has about 37,000 miles on it.

For the past year, I’ve noticed an oscillating vibration when driving
between 65-75mph.  I’ve complained about this to my dealer at least 3-4
times, and each time they make the problem better, but the vibration is
still there.  To date, the following has been done and noted, with my dealer
giving up and throwing his hands in the air:

1- The problem is evident with my winter tires (Blizzaks) and stock wheels,
as well has with my summer Borbet wheels and Potenza tires.  Both sets have
been balanced, problem remains.

2- A recent 4-wheel alignment has been done, helped some, problem remains.

3- None of the 9-3 loaners I’ve driven have this problem.

4- I have two friends who also own 99 9-3s, neither of their cars have this
problem.

5- My dealer brought the car to a neighboring Lexus dealer who had "the
latest alignment equipment", helped some, problem remains.

6- I mentioned that apparently 97-98 900s had a problem with rubber bushings
on the suspension that Saab issued a service notice on, and asked if that
could be the cause – my dealer he never heard of such a service notice.

I’m at wit’s end on this one, and my dealer has pretty much given up – any
ideas?

Thanks

Saab Calander

This month, it being June now, I was downloading my Saab Calander
disktop and I suddenly realized that most of you probably don’t even
realize such a thing exists!  So I am here to tell you that if you go
to saabusa.com go to downloads>calandar you can download a nice
background for your computer with a Saab and a calandar for the month.
The calandar is somewhat quirky…Sunday is on the right hand side of
the week instead of the left,(Because it’s like european calandars,
but Saab people thrive on quirkyness right??) other than that it’s
really a nice calandar…

Cheers

Quality issues

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:40 pm

I have a 98 900Turbo. Last week I washed the car, and to my big
dissapointment I found some large quality isssues. The car is black,
and has black bumpers as well. When I started washing the front
bumper, I saw that it was a little white field on the bumber that
looked much like  bird droppings. So, I took the hose and sprayed on
the "bird dropping". However, it quickly became larger, and I
obviously stopped. It was the paint that peeled of. When I looked
closer this had also happened at the back bumper. Not as big as the 5
cm spot on the front, but smaller fields. How is that possible? The
car has always been garaged and never winter driven. But still, the
paint doesn’t withstand a normal waterhose? Did they use the cheapest
paint they could find? Can this be a warrantyissue? My warranty has
expired a few months ago, but this is surely nothing one can expect
even if you buy a Huynday. If not, what is the best way to fix it? Any
ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Terje

Saab 9000 low oil pressure

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:39 pm

That famous phrase RTFM comes to mind…

Yesterday, after using the car a few times normally, I went out last
night and the oil light in the pictogram didn’t extinguish.  Not having
the manual to hand, I checked the oil level and found it to be on the
low mark.  "clever engineering" I thought.  I was going to the local
supermatket anyway, and I reasoned I would pick up a litre of oil while
I was there.  I noticed that the engine sounded a little noisier than
usual.  I added sufficient oil to get the level to the max mark (less
than a litre), but was surprised to find that the light didn’t
extinguish.  I had a friend with me who wanted a take away on the way
home, so we drove another couple of miles at <40mph to the takeaway.  We
then noticed that the engine noise was now much louder (hydraulic
tappets tappeting!).  I waited whilst he got his food.  Neither of us
had a mobile on us (why is that!) so I gingerly drove the 2.5 miles home
at low speed, oil light still on.  The car drove OK, didn’t sieze, and
we made it.

The previous day the tappets sounded noisy for a short while, but it
rectified itself shortly after.  I’m also a little surprised that the
level was a little low on the dipstick, as it doesn’t usually use oil
between changes.

I assume that either there is a problem with the pump, or the relief
valve is shot, or the strainer is blocked?  The vehicle is ’91 9000 non
turbo, has 135k miles on the clock, has always had regular oil changes
etc.  Have I damaged it irrepairably by driving it home with an obvious
oil problem?  I know how to find how difficult it is to get to the
strainer and the pressure releif valve – My Haynes manual is a bit
obtuse about the pressure relief valve, and shows pictures that seem to
suggest that the amount of dismantling required to get to it is
incorrect.  Can I get to the oil strainer by just removing the sump?
any tips or suggestions on other possible causes and whether the vehicle
is likely to require much more remedial work?  If it does, it would be
cheaper to get another engine, since I have limited funds (unemployed at
present) and it already was pretty near to needing timing chain/balance
chain work.

Danny
