Advice and/or consoling…
It looks great. It’s my dream Saab. A 900 SPG Turbo Convertible, black on
black. However…
There seems to be more than a few electrical problems. The stereo only
works occasionally, and usually not when the turn signals are on. The
dashboard gauge lights don’t work. The horn works only sometimes. The HVAC
output selector does not work (air only comes out from the top). Then today
(my second day with the car), to my horror, the convertible top would not go
back up.
I guess I’m just looking for any advice or suggestions from anyone with
similar experiences. Also, if anyone knows about a mechanical bypass so
that I can put the top up if the electical motor drive isn’t working, I’d
greatly appreciate it.
I love Saabs and have owned a another 900 for 6 years. Somebody please
reassure me that my dream car isn’t a lemon.
Thanks
Todd

Alright Todd! Way to live dangerously. A man after my own heart. I
bought a 91 900T hatch last fall and a 95 volvo 850T wagon last week.
There’s always a shakedown period. Thankfully I have an intrepid
mechanic who, after he berates me for buying cars in a spasm of impulse,
gets me through. Best of luck. kk

If you would be so kind as to crawl into the trunk, there is a bypass valve
on the right side bottom of the back panel in the trunk which if twisted
will allow you to rasie the top again. If this proves impossible, or you
would like the thing to go up itself, pull up on the rear passenger seat and
you will find your top motor and associated wiring. Have a look at its fuse
and the wires which lead to it. I believe they are susceptible to corrosion
and sometimes break off the motor. Sabb engineers spent more than two years
engineering the motor wiring harness so that it only broke when the top was
down.
A question to you as I have a keenn interest in such matters is-how is it
that this car is a convertible and an SPG, especially one which is black on
black? Just curious as I’ve been around and around with this issue myself
trying to determine if my yellow SE was or was not and SPG. Turns out, it
isn’t really an SPG, but looks like one from the factory.
Happy saabing!

I have a 93 convertible, and if the convertible top does nothing and the
pump is not operating, I’d check the limit switches that are engaged by
the emergency brake lever and the automatic gear shift lever when it is
placed in "Park". The pump wont operate if these switches aren’t closed.
